As I've mentioned on my main weblog, Contentious, my brother was recently diagnosed with leukemia and has begun treatment. His chances are good, but getting through leukemia treatment inevitably sucks. And coping with the vast amounts of leukemia-related information is daunting for anyone, whether they have the illness or care deeply for someone who does.
As I try to wrap my brain around a flood of information on leukemia and its treatment, I'm thinking it might make sense to blog about this topic. Since that really doesn't fit in with Contentious, I'm going to start with that here, for now.
Here's what I envision discussing about leukemia...
- What is leukemia and how is it treated, in layperson's terms?
- What are some useful strategies to cope with treatment?
- How can friends and families really help, and what should they avoid?
- What is remission, and what is life in remission like?
...etc., etc., etc.
How's that sound?
For now I'll make it a category on this personal blog, but if I can keep it up and if there's enough interest (basically, if it ends up helping people), maybe I'll expand it into its own blog.
I realize there already are several very good discussion forums about leukemia and cancer in general. These are very helpful, fabulous resources. However, the contents of these discussions are not necessarily as findable as they could be -- which presents an obstacle to people who are new to this topic, and the community of people with leukemia.
Let me know what you think, and comment below to point to examples of good leukemia blogs that are already out there. I don't want to reinvent the wheel.
